William & Mary gold 5 Guineas 1691, S-3422, XF45 NGC, bright and lustrous gold surfaces showing some ancient abrasions, also a few pin-line scratches, and yet the eye-appeal of this large gold coin remains strong: strike is bold, images perfectly centered, rims sharp and high, the color a rich yellow gold with reddish hues. The 5 Guineas of this brief reign are unique stylistically within the denomination inasmuch as the reverse crowned shield enjoys a special elegance: the traditional crowns-capped cruciform shield was reconceived and made into a Renaissance-styled work of art featuring a large and more modern-looking royal-emblems shield, intricately engraved, with the lion rampant of Nassau at its center, topped by a large crown and having, at its sides, decorations that include a large seashell centered on each side. This style may or may not have been inspired by the Italian paintings recently added to the royal collection and studied by engravers as art lovers. Notable as well is the intricately engraved and sharply struck periwig worn by the king, adding to this piece's luxurious eye-appeal.From The Marston Collection of British Coins.
