William III gold "Fine Work" 2 Guineas 1701, S-3457, superb portrait, AU50 NGC, a sharply detailed and well-struck example of this one-year classic, showing the aging king as the very image of elegance, here opposed by a crisply detailed cruciform royal shield, surfaces choice for the grade level with remnants of bright luster, each side centered with distinct rims. We note auction sales in recent years of a small number of higher grade coins and some well-worn examples, but just about nothing at this very affordable grade level and having such exceptional eye-appeal for the condition. A year after this beautiful and valuable gold coin was made for King William, he was out riding one fine day and his horse stumbled into a mole hole, falling and killing William. What lay ahead for his kingdom he would never see. The 18th century would prove to be one of the richest of all for England, materially and culturally. This exquisitely engraved and executed coin signaled both the end of its monarch's era and the beginning of the new. It was struck in small numbers, during only one year, and is rare today. From The Marston Collection of British Coins.

Estimate: 7500.00-9500.00 USD
