George II Roses Shilling 1743, S-3702, Old Bust, MS64 NGC. This is not a Barber quarter. It's a product of the 18th century. The cataloguer grades this shilling Gem UNC, for it is bar none the finest he has seen of this date, and also technically one of the best Old Head shillings of any date seen in 35 years of handling the finest British coins. Obverse and reverse strike is just about perfect. Portrait is wonderful. Shield is crisp. Date and legends are perfectly struck up. Reverse field is slightly dished around the border, giving a super effect, as though the design were framed. Cartwheel luster gleams beneath glorious greenish gold iridescent toning. The cataloguer used to collect shillings and in four decades never saw a better 1743 or other Roses shilling. As good as it gets! From The Estate of John C. Hugon.
