George II gold 5 Guineas 1746-LIMA, S-3665, Old Bust, Decimo Nono edge, AU50 NGC, lustrous and sharp overall, both sides centered with full beaded rims, choice surfaces with light haymarking and some ancient abrasions, lovely reddish old-gold toning, overall most pleasing for the grade level -- an historic and rare piece, struck from gold ore mined by the Spanish at Peru, captured off the Philippines by Admiral Anson, whose crew followed his man 'o war back to Portsmouth on the south coast of England, where they were met by cheering countrymen who formed a parade all the way back to London so as to safely deposit the tons of captured Spanish ore at the Royal Mint. Coins made from this booty were hallmarked to designate the origin of the metals, but also to mock Britain's enemy. Most of the seized specie was silver. Gold pieces bearing the distinctive "Lima" hallmark are rarely seen, and this large gold coin continues to be a treasure, year after year, century after century. From The Marston Collection of British Coins.
