P. Accoleius Lariscolus (43 BC). AR denarius (3.69 gm). Rome. P. ACCOLEIVS LARISCOLVS, raped bust of Diana Nemorensis right / Triple cult statue of Diana Nemorensis facing, supporting on their hands and shoulders a beam above which are five cypress trees; the figure on the left holding poppy, that on the right, a lily. Crawford 486/1. Sear 172. Sydenham 1148. Accoleia 1. Areas of flat strike. Good very fine. From the Mayflower Collection. The cult of Diana Nemorensis was situated at the foot of the Alban Hills near the town of Aricia, about 16 miles south-east of Rome, and was the place of origin of the moneyer's family. The priesthood of this cult was highly unusual, at least from a modern perspective, in that it was restricted to runaway slaves who might only acquire their position by having first violated the sacred grove of the goddess by breaking a branch of one of her trees, then by slaying her head priest in mortal combat.

Estimate: 300.00-400.00 USD
