Popayan Reales 1828 including Hacienda marks, KM87.2. The second year of this distant mint's production of low-value and debased silver coinage was mostly used by the local haciendas for internal commerce. Included is the 1828 with assayer MF; it is indeed an MF since on no other denomination of the era is that combination provoked. Specialists might note that FM (or MF in this one single case) and RU (or UR) had their actual transition in the 1827-28 era; thus it is possible the RU cuartilla of 1826, which has a date which is seven years prior to any other of its denomination at Popayan, was factually produced later. This MF issue is not only unique but it is nicely toned Very Fine and in its original 1976 envelope from where it was first reported. The standard 1828 with RU is represented an un-countermarked example in VF; it seems to show an "F" under the "U". From the haciendas are five well-circulated examples of RU, one of which is holed, and dated 1828 -1829-1830, all with some variation of an incused "R" punch. Interesting and historic items. Sold as is, NO Return.Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group.

Estimate: 300.00-600.00 USD
