Popayan 2 Reales 1880 Scarce Type, KM162. This is from the very final period of silver coinage at this primarily-gold mint in distant Popayan. Being monetized as a "Real System" coin so many years after that system had been displaced occurred only because this piece was struck using amended dies from the 1848 pattern issue. Relatively few exist and their anachronistic nature should cause collectors to particularly solicit them. This piece was on jewelry, as evidenced on the rim and with some field marks. Otherwise AVF but surprisingly attractive and apparently with some luster.Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group.
