Estado Provisional 8 Reales Date Collection, KM21 (just year 1856) and KM-21a (the only difference noted by KM, the alloy, was not by decree but rather happenstance and thus the division is incorrect). As noted with the lot containing the single 1857, this particular type was among Dana's favorites for over 30 years and he scoffed up many of the finest to appear during his time. It is unlikely an equally nice group will again appear in our lifetimes. 1856-G (the only assayer of this date on provably genuine pieces) weighs 16.98 grams and is well detailed except across the top of both sides. Dana graded it VF-EF; only the Higgins plus one other of this first date are reported in better overall quality. 1857-FL: is on a heavy 22.1 gram flan, relatively well made, and with full legends; other than the crypto-jewel in the single-coin lot, this VF+ is equal to the best we recall. 1858-FL with full clear legends, is probably nearly VF and the nicest of this date we recall. 1859-FL is represented by TWO examples. The first has "HON" whereas all the other pieces we checked show "HOND"; the fact that both abbreviations were acceptable at the mint at that time is evident if you examine lot 26009 in last Aprils' Dana's collection offering. The lower half (which includes all the pertinent data on this vertical axis emission) is fully struck; call it VF "lower half" with the upper quarter very weak. The other 1859, with HOND has the N retrograde as well as the Z in CREZCA. This "discovery piece", as labeled by Dana, is of "rude work" and not much better than some blacksmith might have been able to produce .... As Dana also noted, there really is not much evidence of circulation --- the awful flan and strike were the production team's poor efforts. The final piece, weighing 11.2 grams and on a 39 mm flan, is dated 1860 but shows no assayer, nor much else in reality. The "6" in the date is certain but the final digit is a gamble. The researcher Robert Kennedy apparently indicated to Dana that "4 to 6" were known; that is above the census we had established among ourselves. Whether 1860 or 1861, it is rare. This lot should attract serious scrutiny.Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group.
