Thrace, Ainos AR Drachm. Circa 357-341 BC. Head of Hermes facing slightly right, wearing petasos / Cult statue of Hermes Perpheraios on throne; kerykeion in left field, AINION to right. May, Ainos 453; SNG Copenhagen -; BMC -. 3.64g, 16mm, 12h.

Very Fine. Extremely rare control symbol.

From the collection of an antiquarian, Bavaria c. 1960s-1990s.

This reverse shows the interior of the Hermes sanctuary of Ainos; the venerable cult image, Hermes Perpheraios on a gloriously ornamented throne, which was probably added later to the equipment of the temples interior. It is likely the priests wished to change the appearance of the cult sanctuary and give it more format, as cult sanctuaries used to be rather small and simply equipped. Since the people of Ainos chose to strike coins honouring their gods and particularly this sanctuary, its role must have been significant in the everyday life of the people of Ainos.
