Smyrna was one of several predominantly Ionian cities that ascribed their foundation to Amazons, along with Myrina, Sinope, Kyme, Gryne, Ephesos, Pitania, Magnesia, Clete, Pygela, Latoreria and Amastris. On this coin we see the Amazon Smyrna depicted in characteristic fashion with one breast bared and carrying the double-headed axe associated with Amazon warriors. The turreted crown conflates her with Tyche, and alludes to her mythical foundation of the city.
