Galba. Sestertius; Galba; 68-69 AD, Sestertius, 27.07g. BM-115, C-297 (4 Fr.), RIC-263 (C), Kraay-277 (A65/P51). Obv: IMP SER GALBA - AVG TR P Bust draped r. wearing oak wreath; from the wreath knot two oak leaves protrude l. into the field. Rx: S P Q R / OB / CIV SER in three lines in oak wreath. Kraay cites two coins from these dies, in Paris and in the H.P. Hall Collection. Our piece, being of excellent quality, and having appeared earlier in NFA V of 1978, might well be the Hall specimen cited by Kraay; to be certain one would have to check Kraay's plaster cast of the coin in Oxford. Hall's specimen was apparently no longer in his collection at the time of his death, however, since no such coin was described or illustrated in the Glendining sale of the H.P. Hall collection in 1950. Ex NFA V, 23-4 February 1978, lot 396 Possibly the Hall Collection piece cited by Kraay-277This massive sestertius of Galba shows a wonderful, expressive portrait. No doubt the die cutter saw the emperor in real life. Struck on a flawless broad flan with complete lettering and even most of the border of dots on the obverse. Extremely difficult to find a better example. EF
