Aurelian. Denarius; Aurelian; 270-275 AD, Rome, Denarius, 2.74g. Paris-184, Göbl-135c2 (1 spec.), obv. legend var. of RIC-71 and C-249 (6 Fr.). Obv: IMP C AVRELI - ANVS AVG Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed r., seen from front. Rx: VICT - ORI - A AVG Victory advancing l. holding wreath and palm, VSV in exergue, B=officina 2 (obscured by pitting) in l. field. VSV is a rare mark on Aurelian's reformed denarii, and our coin with obverse legend beginning IMP C rather than just IMP is particularly rare, being apparently only the third recorded specimen of this variant. The other two are in Vienna, illustrated by Göbl, and Paris, illustrated in the Paris catalogue: see volume II of that work, p. 300.Reverse somewhat heavily encrusted. EF
