South Africa South African Reserve Bank 10 Shillings 17.11.1931 Pick 82b PMG Very Fine 30. An overprinted example, initially dated 2.4.1932, but overprinted with a revised date of 17.11.1931. W.H. Clegg, the first governor of the South African Reserve Bank, served two terms from 1921-1931. He had requested to stay for an additional year to oversee the completion of the SARB headquarters in Pretoria. This was most likely a bad decision, because the Bank of England had decided to scrap the Gold Standard, and negatively influenced the SARB, and therefore his ultimate legacy. At the time of his retirement however, 1932 dated notes had already been printed, and had to be amended to fit the end date of his governorship. The E/12 prefix is the only prefix that saw this manual change of date. Interestingly, only 800,000 had been printed, and the additional 200,000 could be corrected to resemble the correct date. Because of the shift in currency backing, demand for small denomination notes were great, and not many of them survived. This is the highest graded example of only two on the PMG Population Report. We have not offered this type before, but the last time it crossed the auction circuit a Very Fine 20 sold for just under $2,500 in 2013.
