Tunisia State Bank 50 Riyals 1846 Pick A2 PMG Very Fine 25. A virtually unique banknote, and the first time one has appeared in auction since 2007. Issued and circulated in the mid-19th century by the Ottoman puppet State Bank, this is the only known and cataloged denomination. Tunisia's economy continued to deteriorate during this timeframe, and by 1869, it was bankrupt. International assistance continued through the next decade, and culminated with the French invasion of 1881. A French colonial monetary system ensued, which rendered these notes demonetized. It is truly a miracle that this note has survived to be enjoyed today. The paper has relative crispiness, and all design elements are bright and fresh. Minor spotting and toning is noted on both sides, and there is a tape repair on the back, neither of which do much to detract from the overall appearance.
