Grierson on p. 182 discusses the introduction of portraiture on the coins of Milan. 'Francesco Sforza's portrait ducats, introduced in the early 1450's, makes them the first portrait coins on the Peninsula. The duke's bald head in candidly treated, and it is unfortunate that the artist is unknown'.
