Q. Marcius Libo. 148 BC. Æ Uncia (17.5mm, 4.06 g, 6h). Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; • (mark of value) behind / Prow of galley right; [Q•M]ARC above, LIBO downward before. Crawford 215/7; Sydenham 396g; Type as RBW 925. Dark brown patina, flan broken in antiquity. VF. Extremely rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex JD Collection (Part III, Numismatica Ars Classica 78, 26 May 2014), lot 407; Numismatica Ars Classica 40 (16 May 2007), lot 416 (CHF 800).

A later comment in this sale (on RRC 315/1 L.H.TVB uncia) speculates on the mystery of the continued production of unciae in very low volumes at a time when the minimum regular coin in circulation was a quadrans or sextans. In my view, an understanding of the role of these ultra small change coins may unlock some of the mysteries around coin issuance and usage in ancient Rome. [Andrew McCabe]
