AZORES. Azores - Portugal. 100 Reis, ND (1887). Luis I. PCGS Genuine--Damage, Fine Details Gold Shield; Countermark: EF Details.
KM-A24(plate coin); cf.Gomes-L1.22.02 (host not listed); BES-not listed. Issued by decree of 31 March 1887. Crowned G.P. (Governo Portuguese) countermark within circular indent applied to the reverse of an undated 40 (XXXX) Reis of Pedro Prince Regent (1667-83; Gomes-43.03). RARE host coin. A small hole pierced from the obverse at 12 o'clock and several small areas of surface damage account for the details designation. Otherwise a wholesome and attractively toned example with a nice look.

Article I of the decree states that all foreign silver coins are to be submitted within 30 days of publication to be countermarked in the districts of Angra, Horta or Ponta Delgada. These countermarks should have been applied to damaged or badly worn coins, for which the decree was intended.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.

With detailed Krause Publications envelope DUID # 331163.

Estimate: $150.00- $250.00
