COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Mexico. "Carrillo" 2 Reales, ND (1841). San Jose Mint. PCGS VF-25 Gold Shield; Countermark: EF Details.
KM-10; Guardian-Type VI. Type I Countermark. Issued by Decree of 19 November 1841, by President Braulio Carrillo Colina. SCARCE host coin. Initial test punch on reverse between "REPUBLICA" and "MEXICANA" of the legend, plug removed from obverse centered at the base of the Phrygian cap, double six-pointed star applied to center of reverse on eagle's breast. All on an 1828-GoMJ Mexico Republic 2 Reales. Countermark deeply applied with good definition of the fine details and clear diagnostics of the stamp. A few minor abrasions consistent with the grade are mentioned for accuracy. Otherwise a wholesome example of the type with light grey color atop of the devices, medium golden-grey tone in the fields and areas of slate patina in the peripherals and amongst the devices. Much nicer than normally encountered and certain to see spirited bidding from the specialist as such.

The test punch and removal of the plug of silver is standard for this issue. To verify that the coins were in fact silver they tested them first with the punch mark in the legend. They then proceeded to remove the plug of silver and then apply the double six-pointed star countermark. According to sources the removal of the plug of silver was done to pay for the countermarking of these coins. While this cataloger believes this to be true, I also believe that regardless of denomination they were all mutilated in a similar fashion with the test punch, plug removal and star countermark all in the same general locations for each type of host coin.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
