Watch List notes:

GREAT BRITAIN. Study Group of Contemporary Counterfeits and Modern Concoctions (3 pieces), ND (ca. 1797 to Mid-20th Century). Grade Range: VERY FINE to EXTREMELY FINE.
A neat study group of a contemporary counterfeit George III oval countermark of crude manufacture and two different deceptive modern concoctions for the specialist looking to expand their knowledge and appreciation of the British countermark series. Close inspection is advised and will reward the diligent bidder. All have been sent to either NGC or PCGS and are accompanied with appropriate tickets.

1) Contemporary Counterfeit Dollar (4 Shillings 9 Pence), ND (ca. 1797). 25.98 gms. cf.Manville-pg.5-6. A Sheffield plate die struck forgery of a 1781-MFF bust 8 Reales with fictitious Mexico City mintmark of Charles III with a false George III oval countermark. Both host coin and countermark are of crude manufacture. A couple of edge files reveal the copper core and thick silver plate, a few light scratches in the obverse field mentioned for accuracy. Attractive old cabinet patina throughout.

2) Azores. Modern Concoction 1200 Reis, ND (ca. Mid-20th Century). 26.72 gms. Modern imitation of Great Britain George III oval countermark (ca. 1797) combined with a modern imitation of an Azores Crown countermark (ca. 1871). All on a 1797-PTS PP Bolivia bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV). Countermarks deeply applied with excessive force giving characteristics not associated with genuine examples of either countermark. Cleaned with light debris amongst the devices, now lightly toned. An interesting piece that if genuine would be an outstanding combination.

3) Azores. Modern Concoction 1200 Reis, ND (ca. Mid-20th Century). 26.85 gms. Modern imitation of Great Britain George III oval countermark (ca. 1797) combined with a modern imitation of an Azores crowned "GP" countermark (ca. 1887). All on a 1896-MoFM Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV). Much like the other modern concoction in this lot the countermarks are deeply applied with excessive force giving characteristics not associated with genuine examples of either countermark. Cleaned with light hairlines and minor debris amongst the devices now lightly toned. An interesting combination that would truly be an exceptional rarity if genuine.
