GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1839-40). PCGS Genuine--Holed, EF Details Gold Shield; Countermark: EF Details.
26.40 gms. KM-107; Jovel-Type III, Fig. 4.6. Issued by decree of 26 April 1839 through 20 November 1840. Type II Countermark; sun over mountains within circular boarder. A SCARCE and popular host coin with a RARE countermark die state. Countermark applied to a 1733-MoMF Mexico Klippe 8 Reales of Philip V. Countermark in terminal die state with a series of die cracks running through and several cuds, but well applied and clear. Pierced from the reverse which accounts of the details designation, but is par for the course for this host coin. Also noted are a couple of unnatural flat spots that have toned over nicely and now blend with the rest of the surfaces. Despite its shortcomings, an attractive and nicely preserved example with an attractive combination of argent color on the high points, light golden-grey tone in the open fields and slate patina in the protected areas.
Estimate: $600.00- $900.00
