GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Peru. 8 Reales, ND (1840-41). PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield; Countermark: AU Details.
KM-121.2; Jovel-VII countermark. Type IV Hinged Dies Countermark; Sun over mountains on obverse; Five-pointed star superimposed on bow, arrow and quiver on reverse. Issued by decree of 31 October 1840, instituted December to early 1841. VERY RARE host coin. On an 1822-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales. Countermark deeply applied with sharp clear details, though slightly rusty. An attractive example with soft to medium grey patina throughout with a lovely iridescent sheen that pops out when tilted in the light.

The implementation of the hinged dies resulted in improved efficiency of the countermarking process. Though these particular host types meet the fineness requirement as stated in the above decree, they lack in the weight requirements of 27 grams. As such these types were countermarked in error being approximately two grams light.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.

Purportedly Ex: Richard Stuart Collection.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
