PERU. 8 Reales, 1823-L JP. Lima Mint. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield.
KM-117.3; FC-85b; Grunthal-Sellscopp-287d. VERY RARE found struck over a Republican issue. Overstruck on an 1822-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales. Signs of the original host are visible near the date on the obverse and on the reverse near "ET" of the legend. An attractively toned survivor with luster in the protected areas.

Royalist forces reoccupied the city of Lima between 17 June and 18 July 1823. Before departing they removed the majority of the minting equipment, moved it the to fortress Real Felipe in Callao and burned down the mint. The overstruck examples are the result of a small quantity of Libre type 8 Reales found at the mint after the patriot forces abandoned the city.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.
