KM-A139; Basso-43; cf.PNM#6-171; cf.PNM#16-369; cf.PNM#21-IX-21; Gil-5-4-1-II. Type VI Countermark, crowned Y.II. within circle. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837, by decree of 1 February 1836. On an 1831-LIMA MM Peru Republic 8 Reales. VERY RARE with countermark over both sides of perforation. Countermarks well struck over perforation with clear definition to fully identify the variety. A moderately worn example with soft grey tone in the open fields and atop of the devices while an attractive slate grey is present in the peripherals and the protected areas. A highly sought after type certain to see spirited bidding from the advanced collector.

The perforated examples of the Philippines countermark series are an integral part to understanding the series as a whole. The countermarks were interchangeable and can be linked to other examples of both perforated and non-perforated types. Such is the case with the perforated examples in this sale where each piece can be linked to the other as well as other pieces in institutions and major collections.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.
