SPAIN. Contemporary Counterfeit Cob 4 Reales, ND (ca. Early 1600s). Uncertain Mint (SO - II Horizontally). VERY FINE.
11.03 gms. Struck in crude imitation of a Spanish Mainland or Spanish Colonial 2 Reales cob on an octagonal planchet most closely resembling that of Philip II. Bold complete shield with completely blundered legend "IMASVIGNOBIRDAD", inverted "V" in place of "A"; Reverse: Bold full cross, castles and lions with completely blundered legend "-OABONAXROCD...S-XOD", inverted "V" in place of "A". Slight surface porosity mentioned for accuracy. A lightly toned and very interesting issue sure to add depth to the next collection it enters.

This is a very perplexing issue with the blundered legends and weight closer to a 4 Reales, sadly the metal content gives little in the way of origins containing many elements. The contents are as follows Ag(silver): 40.88%; Cu(Copper): 28.71%; Au(Gold): 7.94%; Fe(Iron): 7.02%; Sn(Tin): 4.47%; As(Arsenic): 3.22%; Pb(Lead): 3.18%; Hf(Hafnium): 2.90%; Zn(Zinc): 1.54%.

From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.

With Mark Birr Rare Coins ticket.

With PCGS "Counterfiet" Ticket.

Estimate: $100.00- $150.00
