GERMANY. German Eagle Order, Military Division, V Class Officer (III Class Merit) Badge, Instituted 1937. MINT STATE.
45 x 51 mm, excluding loop. Barac-533; Werlich-439. Gold bordered, eight pointed white enameled cross. Between each arm is an eagle-topped swastika in gold and white. Crossed swords on the obverse signify that this was to be issued to a recipient in the armed forces. The number 24 is stamped on the suspension ring. Housed in a fitted red leather presentation case with the Nazi Government eagle on the cover and Deutscher Adlerorden / V. Klasse mit Schwertern gold stamped on the fabric on the inside of the lid. As always, caution should be exercised when purchasing WW II German military decorations, and that is especially true for this Order. Robert Werlich, in his Orders and Decorations of All Nations states: The author knows of no other order or decoration of which more reproductions and copies have been made. In many cases the insignia were made from original dies and it is virtually impossible even for an expert to ascertain whether the insignia was truly awarded by the Nazi Government. This Order, which comes to us without provenance, appears genuine and in an original case as issued. To view more military decorations in the Internet Only portion of this auction, click here.
