Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 27.34 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 71. Laureate, draped bust right / Pax standing left, holding branch and cornucopia. RIC II.1 183 (this coin cited). Hard dark green patina, areas of minor roughness. VF. Very rare.
From the Summer Haven Collection. Ex Münzen und Medaillon GmbH 12 (11 April 2003) lot 415; Schenk-Behrens 40 (26 November 1980), lot 67.
This variety with a draped bust, or slightly unusual style, was originally thought to be the product of a provincial mint. RIC II vol. 1, revised in 2008, attributes it to Rome, but it is the only example cited of this type.
