After his adoption by an uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio, he was commonly called Quintus Caepio Brutus. When Marc Antony lost control in Rome during the autumn of 44 BC. the situation offered a new chance to Brutus and Cassius, who were able to raise a large army in the east, which they wanted to use to liberate Italy from Octavian and to restore the Senate. During a campaign in Lycia towns that did not side with them immediately, were sacked (e.g., Xanthus).
