Ancient - GREEK COINS
AR Tetradrachm 449–413 BC, Illyria and Central Greece, ATTICA Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive-leaves and floral scroll. Rev. owl, olive sprig with berry and crescent in upper left field, AΘE to right. All within incuse square. S. 2526This is one of the most iconic ancient coins and perhaps the most desirable Greek coin. Athena's helmeted head on the obverse and her owl on the reverse make this type symbolic for the Classical Period of Greece. It was during this time that the Greek states had to unite against the invading Persian Empire, which resulted in Athens' rise to power amongst the city-states. The moon as seen behind the owl on the reverse has been speculated to be a symbol for the victory over the Persians, as it is missing on the earlier Archaic counterpart of this type. A collectable and historical piece for numismatists and historians alike!17.08 g Very fine +/Nearly extremely fine
