UNITED STATES: 1 cent, 1860, PCGS graded AU58, Indian Head Copper-Nickel type, ex Jim Farr Collection. By 1860 the Mint's program of retiring the old copper cents and half cents was largely complete, and merchants began to complain about a redundancy of the new small cents. These coins were not redeemable at the Treasury, so the existing stock forced a reduction in the number minted for 1860.
