TURKEY: Abdul Hamid II, 1876-1909, cupro-nickel medal, AH1318, Moyaux-568A, 30mm, opening of the Hejaz Railway 1900 (Hamidiye-Hijaz Demiryolu), toughra of Sultan Abdul Hamid II with "al-Ghazi" at right above steam locomotive, all within wreath, date on ribbon at bottom // "Medal reserved to patriots who have served the Hamidiye Hijaz Railway" written in Ottoman Arabic script, pierced as usual, EF. Sultan Abdul Hamid II announced the building of a railway to the holy cities of Medina and Mecca in 1900. It was to be financed from donations, and operated entirely by Ottoman subjects although the principal engineer was German. Donors were rewarded with a medal, struck in a variety of metals: the wearable versions being either 68mm or 30mm. However, Arab rebels prevented the construction crews from reaching Mecca. Continued opposition during World War I resulted in the line terminating at Medina. The Sultan issued gold, silver and nickel medals to donators, for instance the nickel medal was given for donations of 5-50 lira, silver medal for whom donated 50-100 lira with the title Bey, and donations of more than 100 Lira a gold medal medal was awarded along with the title of Pasha. The Ottoman lira equaled 100 kurush and 1 kurush was equal to 40 para.

Estimate: 100-150 USD
