AZORES: AR 600 réis, ND [1887], KM-26.2, Gomes-L1 25.05, struck by the decree of 1887, countermarked crown above G.P. on Portugal 600 reis 1807, in name of the regent João, VF. Struck under the Decree of March 31, 1887. This second decree ordained that all foreign coinage in the Azores was to be countermarked with a crowned G.P. (Governo Português) within a circle. These also were eventually to be replaced or exchanged by current Portuguese coinage upon their entry into the public treasury. This countermark type has been heavily counterfeited and should be approached with caution.
