ALGARBE: Musa b. Muhammad, 1234-1262, AR square dirham (1.61g), NM, ND, A-4275 (ex A-I410), Zeno-90961, always without mint & date, amir al-gharb / al-musta`in bi-llah / musa bin muhammad bin / nasr, ibn mahfuz // Maghribi formula allah rabbuna / muhammad rasuluna / al-`abbas imamuna ('God is our lord, Muhammad our messenger, al-`Abbas [i.e., the Abbasid caliph] is our imam'), excellent strike with sharp, bold lettering, one of the finest examples of this popular type, AU, RR, ex Ralph A. Cannito Collection. The ruler is entitled amir al-gharb, "amir of the west", i.e., of the Portuguese district of Algarve. It is now presumed that the actual mint was located at Niebla (Labla in Arabic), near the city of Huelva in Spain, near the border with Portugal.
