Ilkhans. Reine Sati Beg, AH 739. Dinar AH 739, Bagdad.
When Abu-Sa’id died at the early age of thirty-two in 736 h. he left no designated heir as he had no children of his own. The powerful nobles cast about for a suitable Mongol successor, and after three males quickly passed from the scene they turned to Abu-Sa’id’s sister, Sati Beg Khatun, the widow of Hasan Kuchak’s grandfather Choban. Sati Beg was proclaimed ruler in Arran by Hasan Kuchak, and coinage such as this previously unrecorded piece from Baghdad was struck in her name during her
nine-month reign, which was brought to an end when it was judged inappropriate for a woman to occupy the throne.
