Elagabalus(?) Æ24 of Petra, Arabia. AD 218-222. IMP C M [..], bust or head right; traces of undertype: wreath / PЄ[TΛA], founder ploughing right with pair of oxen; [COLON] in exergue; traces of undertype: M AVR ANTON, bust right. For overtype, cf. Sofaer 51; for a similar overstrike, cf. Sofaer 58 (overstruck on an issue from Antioch, Seleucis and Pieria. 6.88g, 24mm, 7h.
Very Fine.
The traces of the obverse legend suggest this is an issue of Elagabalus as we find no other use of the titulature "IMP C M.." at the mint of Petra. Similarly, the traces of the obverse legend of the undertype suggest this coin was overstruck on a coin of Caracalla or Elagabalus. A similar coin in the Sofaer collection was overstruck on a 'ΔЄ' issue from Antioch, Seleucis and Pieria (see references, 8.35g, and McAlee 799). As the reverse undertype appears to display a wreath, this coin may have also been originally struck at Antioch however there are no examples in McAlee with this bust type (McAlee 799/1 is of a similar weight).
