RUSSIAN MEDALS. THE GREAT NORTHERN WAR, SWEDISH AND GERMAN MEDALS OF RUSSIAN INTEREST. Medal. Silver. 37 mm. 18.98 gm. By Philipp Heinrich Müller. The Peace of Altranstädt, 1706. Merseburger 2676, Goppel 777, Englehardt 1281. Mercury flying left above the city of Leipzig / Mars clasping hands with Hercules, both with their feet on a fallen Fury; COGNATO SANGVINE VICTA (Conquered by a blood relative), four-line legend in ex. proclaims the peace between Poland and Sweden and the date. Raised legend on edge. Pale violet-gray with soft iridescent hues and lustre. Almost uncirculated. After successfully invading Poland, Karl XII helped install Stanislaw Leszczynski as king in 1705, replacing his nemesis Augustus II, the Strong. A faction, though, remained loyal to the Saxon elector Augustus, boon ally of Peter the Great against Sweden. The allies attempted to regain control in Poland-Lithuania, but they were thwarted, first by Karl XII at the Battle of Grodno, then by his commander, Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld at the Battle of Fraustadt. With the Saxon electorate now virtually undefended, the Swedish king joined his forces with those of Rehnskiöld, who he promoted to Field marshal and Count, and they occupied Silesia. Augustus the Strong sued for peace. Under the Treaty of Altranstädt, Augustus had to renounce his claims to the Polish throne, while his alliance with Russia was declared void.
