Published in the Chemnitz-Zwickau area, Der Kämpfer ('The Fighter') was originally a newspaper connected with the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD). In January 1919, it became an organ of the German Communist Party. The KPD (Komunistische Partei Deutschland) was founded in the wake of World War I by socialists led by Rosa Luxemburg and the radical Spartacist League. Under the leadership of Karl Leibknecht and Luxemburg, the party was committed to violet revolution in Germany. A new leadership in 1923, though, set its eyes more on political action than immediate revolution and actively contested Reichstag elections. The KPD was banned and suppressed by the Nazis in 1933.
