ORDERS AND DECORATIONS

FRANCE. Silver Order of the Iron Crown, Knight's Badge.
34 x 23 mm; cf.Barac-629; cf.Werlich-392. Crown of Lombardy with a gold oval medallion of Napoleon, facing right. Motto "DIO ME LA DIEDE GUAIA CHI LA TOCCA" as noted in Werlich, which is not one of the three variants listed by Barac. The crown is suspended from an Imperial Napoleonic eagle with a loop on its head. This is the version produced for Italian recipients, but is listed under France in both Werlich and Barac, which it was listed with Italian orders when this specimen was sold by Morton and Eden in their sale of American Numismatic Society holding in 2007 (Lot 764). Noted there as being of Second Empire French manufacture. Minor chipping to the blue enamel surrounding the motto. Choice and appealing.ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.

Estimate: $3500
