Ionia. Uncertain mint. c. 630 BC. EL Hecte, 2.37g. Obv: Bridled horse's head left. Rx: Incuse square. Weidauer 141 = Weber Coll. 5718. EF.
In recent decades, this series has become better known than at the time when Liselotte Weidauer published her book on electrum coins. The series is a vast one, consisting of hectae and minor fractions down to 1/48 staters. A related hemihecton (1/12 stater) was found in the Artemision deposit (Hogarth 77), thus establishing an early date for the whole issue. The location of the mint cannot yet be determined, but it might have been one of the major cities in the plains of Ionia where horses could be bred.
