Caria. Uncertain Mint. c. 520-490 BC. Stater, 10.58g. Obv: Forepart of lion right. Rx: Irregular incuse, divided into two oblong halves. SNG Kayhan 930. Cf. SNG Aulock 8033. Rosen Coll. 613. Somewhat crystallized. About EF.

Ex Superior, 30 May 1995, lot 7608, Lewis Egnew Collection.

One of the characteristic but still unattributable Carian coins with strong technical affinities to the coinages of Posidion, Kamiros, and Lindos. The incuse pattern (a square divided into two oblong halves) is also known from these series. The lion type and the style point to a mint in Caria proper rather than to one of the major island mints.
