Struck in the name of Alexander the Great after the battle of Ipsos (301 BC), where the founder of the Seleucid empire, Seleukos I, had defeated his rival Lysimachus. The vision of the empire of Alexander then faded away, since the diadochs had divided it among themselves, but the name of the great Alexander was still used to validate the coinage.
