Calabria. Tarentum. c. 280-230 BC. Didrachm, 6.90g. (3h). Obv: Diademed head of nymph left. Rx: Boy on trotting horse holding palm leaf; horse's front left leg raised and TA symbol below. Dolphin beneath horse, symbol of horse's front leg in upper left field. Apparently unpublished with this symbol. For the Campano-Tarentine series, see HN Italy 2098.. VF.

Ex Superior, 30 May 1995, lot 7030.

Combining types from Campanian cities and Tarentum, the Campano-Tarentine coinage remains a mystery and has not yet been closely studied. Judging from the coins' fabric, the mint may have been situated at Tarentum, but the series circulated in Campania rather than Calabria. The abundance of symbols (our coin adds a new one to the inventory) suggests that the mint was an experienced one.
