Justinian I. 527-565 AD. Solidus, 4.43g. (6h). Alexandria, c. 527-537 AD. Obv: D N IVSTINI - ANVS PP AVG Helmeted bust of Justinian 3/4 facing in military dress holding spear over shoulder and shield, small cross on helmet. Rx: VICTORI - A AVGGG A Victory standing facing holding long cross and globus cruciger, star to right. In exergue ALEXAOB. This type was unknown until recently so is not in any of the major references. Today five specimens are recorded. For three other examples, all from the same dies as ours, see Gemini IX, 9 January 2012, lot 528; Lanz/Bernardi 148, 4 January 2010, lot 167; and Lanz 151, 30 June 2011, lot 943. Justinian's right eye is flatly struck. Mint State.
