A Very Important Series of Coins of Syracuse mostly from a Distinguished European Collector
Tetradrachm signed by Sosion circa 425-413, AR 17.12 g. Fast quadriga driven l. by charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above Nike flying r. to crown the driver with an open wreath. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟ – ΣΙΟ – "I Head of the nymph Arethusa l. with thickly waved hair caught up at nape of neck in serpentine waves, wearing necklace, earring and ampyx inscribed ΣΟΣΙ / ΩΝ. Around, four dolphins. Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. A lovely portrait struck on an
exceptionally large flan and a lovely old cabinet tone, hairline flan-crack
at twelve o'clock on reverse, otherwise extremely fine
