France - Denier n.d, Silver, CHARLEMAGNE 768–814, Monnaies Carolingiens Milan mint. Cross pattée ✠ CARLVS REX FR. Rev. Karolus monogram ✠ MEDIOL. MG. 212; Prou 905; Biaggi 1364In 772 pope Adrian I fell at odds with Desiderius, king of the Lombards, over certain possessions around Ravenna. When the king invaded the Papal States Adrian called on Charlemagne for aid, and in 773 Charlemagne invaded the kingdom of the Lombards. By 774 all the Lombard nobles save for the Prince of Benevento had submitted to him and Charlemagne was proclaimed King of the Lombards as well as King of the Franks. Milan was one of the cities that surrendered to Charlemagne in 774, after which he must have began striking coins there in his name. This highly desirable specimen here on auction is thus one of the most sought-after Carolingian coins as it can be confidently attributed to Charlemagne.1.60 g. RR. Stunning specimen with little to no wear and attractive grey toning Extremely fine
