The Noble was introduced to Great Britain by Edward III in 1334. The distinctive gold coin was notable for being struck on a large flan and weighing more than any other coin type in the medieval period, (Grierson, 1991). The obverse design depicting the king standing in a ship, may be a reference to England's victory over France at the battle of Sluys in 1340.
