The Collection of British Tokens formed by John Rose

17th Century Tokens, LONDON (City), Blackfriars, Tho. Sutton, Penny, 1671, 2.30g/12h (N 6667; BW. 349). Nail piercing and slightly buckled, otherwise fine with partial green patina, extremely rare; superior to the Norweb specimen £100-£150

Provenance: Wallis & Wallis Auction (Lewes), 12 June 2012, lot 55 (part); Q.D.R. Archer Collection, DNW Auction 160, 5-6 June 2019, lot 1046.

From this specimen it is clear that the legend on the obv. reads mun hous and not mum hous as asserted in SCBI Norweb. In his 1855 catalogue of the Beaufoy cabinet J.H. Burn stated that 'the acquisition of this piece has ever been a desideratum with collectors; it is engraved in Snelling's Copper Coinage, pl.v fig. 39'
