Viking Age
Scandinavian?, Penny, imitation of reverses of Æthelred II's Short Cross type from c. 1009-1017 and the widely imitated German/Continental St. Colonia type, 0.90 g. The Short Cross die is Malmer 1861 that is part of the small (perhaps non-Scandinavian) chain 154. This combination of 1861 with an imitation of a St. Colonia reverse or any other German/Continental types is hithero unknown and thereby both extremely rare and maybe part of an argument for a non-Scandinavian origin for chain 154. This specimen is on the other hand probably not as well-struck and definitely lighter than published specimens belonging to chain 154. No very close parallels to this specimen is known, but one, much heavier (1.47 g), coin in Kungl. Myntkabinettet in Stockholm is also an imitation of an English reverse (Pointed helmet) combined with a St. Colonia reverse, cf. Frédéric Elfver, 'Dansk, tysk, engelsk eller slavisk? Om mynt från 1000-talet, influenser och kulturkontakter', Thelin & Wijk (eds.), Moneta 2011, p. 65-72.
