EUBOIA. Histiaia. 3rd-2nd centuries BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 15.5 mm, 2.22 g, 5 h). Vine-wreathed head of nymph Histiaia to right. Rev. IΣTI-A-IEΩN Nymph seated right on stern of galley decorated with wing, holding stylis. BCD Euboia 399 (this coin). Attractively toned and unusually elegant: an exceptionally fine example. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Vineyard Collection and from the BCD Collection, Lanz 111, 25 November 2002, 399, ex Schweizerischer Bankverein 38, 12 September 1995, 158.

Everything about this coin is extraordinary: the style of the head of Histiaia is very fine and very well-made, with depth and individuality. On the reverse, we have a nymph leaning backwards, her legs elegantly crossed, and only kept from falling over by her right hand propped on the galley stern on which she sits, and by the way she clutches a staff (a trophy or a pennant?) with her left.
