CILICIA. Mallos. Circa 440-390 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 10.51 g, 9 h). Beardless, apparently female, winged deity in the running-kneeling position to right, with her hair long and covered by a close-fitting cap with a ball-tipped spike; she has prominent breasts, wears a short chiton, and, with both hands, holds a disc bearing an eight-pointed star. Rev. ΜΑΡ Swan walking to right; below left, ankh; below right, barley grain; all within a dotted border within a shallow incuse square. Apparently unpublished, but cf. Traité II, 3, 1397 for an example with a male figure holding a disc with eight rays. Extremely rare. A fascinating piece, with a most unusual obverse and a reverse with a Swan to right, rather than, as is normal, to left. Some surface roughness and traces of cleaning, otherwise, extremely fine.
