Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Assarion (Bronze, 20.5 mm, 6.62 g, 9 h), Pessinus in Galatia. ΑΥ ΚΑ ΑΔΡ ΑΝΤΩ EΥС-E Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. ΓAΛ•TO ΠECCIN The rivergod Gallos reclining left, holding reed in his right hand and leaning left on urn from which water flows. BMC 9. Devreker 27-28. RPC IV online 5695. SNG Paris 2579 (same dies). Rare and with attractive details. Good very fine.



The river Gallos actually flowed through the ancient city, but only seasonally. In any case, beginning in the early Imperial period the river was canalized so that its bed could serve as the city's main north-south artery – the cardo maximus.
